Running in Surrey
Surrey is a fantastic county for runners to get out and enjoy their natural surroundings. Divided in two by the North Downs, to the north of which is mostly flat land and to the south in the western part of the county are the sandstone Surrey Hills.
Surrey has lots of mature woodland areas and is in fact the most wooded county in England, with 22.4% coverage compared to a national average of 11.8%. Among its many beauty spots are Box Hill, Leith Hill, Frensham Ponds, Newlands Corner and Puttenham and Crooksbury Commons. Box Hill has the oldest untouched area of natural woodland in the UK, one of the oldest in Europe.
There are many commons and access lands in Surrey, together with an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways. This includes the North Downs Way, a scenic long-distance path that is great for runs - both long and short.
The highest elevation in Surrey is Leith Hill near Dorking. Both Box Hill and Leith Hill host a number of races throughout the year, notably the Leith Hill Half and the Box Hill Fell Race. Surrey Hills is also a popular race venue, home to the Surrey Hills Trail Challenge which takes place in May.
Put simply; beautiful rural scenery, a thriving running scene and close proximity to the country's capital make Surrey a fantastic place for runners to live and make the most of life.
